Tyron Perryman of Tea & Converse kicks off the Watch This House Top 5 Producers Discussion with a sneakily thought provoking list of beats and beat makers. Tyron is literally my oldest friend in the world so I have to admit that I saw some of this coming (like what his favorite RZA beat would be) but the fact that it took him longer to come up with his list because he was "trying to justify including DJ U-Neek" was left field for me.
Let the Conversation begin!
The RZA
I want to
list 36 reasons (one for each chamber). And I could probably pick just one that would adequately argue his stature, skillset & contribution but I'll
list 7 (that's the god number right?).
1. Enter The Wu-Tang
(36 Chambers)
An impeccable and
arguably unrivaled body of work. And that's all before going Digital.
Favorite beat:
Black Jesus - by Ghostface Killah ft. Raekwon & U-God (and not just because of the U-God feature).
Kanye West
He
challenges himself and the genre and makes those around him better and isn't
afraid to ask the old wiley vets (i.e. Jon Brion, RZA, Bink, Pete Rock) for
guidance, advice & know how.
In a genre
predicated on speed; laying a verse in one take or making a beat in 15 minutes,
it's refreshing to have someone who is meticulous and tedious. Who focuses on
getting it right and making GOOD Music.
Favorite Beat: We
Major ft. Nas & Really Doe
The Neptunes
Kaleidescope and Wanderland and In Search Of and The New Sacred Cow and Make
Sure They See My Face and there's just too much to choose from.
Oh and Lord Willin'
and Hell Hath No Fury and Fly or Die and the half of Justified that Timbaland
didn't do.
Oh and the Jay-Z
records.
Favorite Beat:
"I Still Love You" by 702, "Excuse Me" by Jay-Z,
"Trill" by the Clipse
Earthtone
Ideas/Earthtone/Earthtone III

*Mr. DJ not pictured. |
The perfect blend of funk, soul & boom bap.
In a limited role on ATLiens they provided us with "Elevators (Me &
You)" and "Wheels of Steel". With starter's minutes on the two
subsequent albums, they gave us two championships in Aquemini & Stankonia.
Favorite Beat:
Spotieotiedopalicious by Outkast
Ski Beatz
Because
fans are fickle and the soundscape changes every couple years, you're not
supposed to be able to take 10 years off and slip back in like you've never left.
Ski Beatz did that and returned if not just as good, even better than he was
the first time around. If we didn't even mention the work he did with Curren$y,
the quality of beats he threw Smoke DZA for George Kush is unfair. He also
outfitted Rugz D. Bewler with a handful of high quality beats on Save Bewler
and Superbad and Cobra Kai weren't even on that project. And before the 10 year
hiatus were his Uptown Saturday Night and Reasonable Doubt contributions. Just
saying.
